Joy in Our Homes

Every family knows that having joy in our homes is important. Without it, our homes are not a place that anyone would want to be.

joy in the home, joy home, home joy, fruit of the spirit

Joy is such a small word, but what a great impact it can make on our lives.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law..”  Galatians 5:22-23

Exactly what is joy?

Joy is more than a feeling. Yet, often that is what we think of when we speak of joy.

While we may feel “joyful” throughout our lives, it is not constant. Feelings fade, but true joy can not be taken away.

The actual definition of joy that specifically applies to Christians is; “a glorious, triumphant state”.

Where can we find this type of joy?

Joy is in the presence of the Lord. (Ps. 16:11)

It is found in God’s salvation. (Ps 51:12)

Joy is our God. (Ps. 43:4)

It is given to us from Jesus. (John 15:11)

By studying God’s Word I’ve discovered that true joy is found in our faith and our relationship with God.

What does God’s Word tell us about joy?

Everlasting joy shall be ours. (Isa. 51:11)

Our sorrow will be turned into joy. (John 16:20)

It allows the fruit of the Spirit to grow in us. (Gal. 5:22 & 25)

True joy in the Lord is our strength. (Neh. 8:10)

5 Ways to Exhibit Joy in Our Homes

1. Keep God first in our lives.

By doing so we are choosing to be in His presence, which is where it is found. (Ps. 16:11)

2. Recall throughout the day (audibly or in prayer) that your joy is found in God, not your circumstances.

It is not based on your feelings. Reminding ourselves where our joy is to come from will strengthen us throughout our days.

3. Jesus gives us joy.

Spend time with Him. If we are lacking, we must ask in faith, for God gives liberally to those that ask. (Jms. 1:5)

4. Utilize God’s strength when we are weak.

Grasp His joy, for it strengthens us for all things. (Neh. 8:10)

5. Teach our children to find true joy in the Lord.

We must teach them that the feelings which things or circumstances in life bring along will fade, they will not last.

Joy is not always an easy fruit of the spirit to exhibit in our homes. In fact, it may be the hardest.

Living life daily with those you will bring conflict, struggles and difficulties you never imagined. It is part of being human.

Exhibiting joy in our homes is essential because it is a key way that others can see Christ in us. Our families should see Him in us more than anyone else.

How do you strive to daily live out joy in your home?
