You Are New

One of the most beautiful gifts we are given in Christ, is the gift of being made new. As Christians most of us have read the verses and heard the sermons about being made new, but do we truly understand the depth of what that means?

What Does Being New in Christ Mean?

  • Being made new in Him means we are to leave behind our old habits….putting off the old ways of life and embracing the new!

Ephesians 4:22 says, “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts.”

The new ways of a Christians should be to fulfill the Lord’s calling on our lives based on the words He gives us in the Bible.

  • As new creations in Christ our past is just that – past. The things which are behind us are forgiven and forgotten.

We must remember what 1 John 1:9 says,If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Isaiah 43:25 states, “ I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.”

Hebrews 10:17 tell us, “…their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.”

A New Creation Should Put Off…

It is important to know what things are not to be part of a child of God’s live. As Christians we need to act according to God’s directions in His word.

Ephesians 4:25-31 says, “Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice.”

Colossians 3:8-9 tell us, “But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds.”

No Christian will succeed in always putting these things off because no one is perfect. Yet, our daily desire must be to become more like Christ. Seeking Him and His ways throughout each and every day, striving to be more like Him whatever task is at hand.

The Actions of a New Creation…

Just as we are to put off things as Christians, we are given instructions as to what our actions need to be as well.

God tells us in Colossians 3:12-16 to, “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

Above all we must remember that the very word by which we are called, “Christian” means, “a believer in Christ”, as such we need to ensure our actions are honoring to Him.

Colossians 3:17 states, “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”

We often have a hard time letting go of the past, but God sees us as a new creature because Jesus’ blood covers us and our sins. This is God’s grace in action…an amazing gift

indeed!
