Song of Solomon for Wives

In my early years of marriage I clung to God’s Word. Life as a wife wasn’t going the way I thought it would. I was blessed to have amazing examples of Biblical marriage through my parents and paternal grandparents. My husband wasn’t from a Christian home, so what I was expecting when I said “I do” simply wasn’t a realistic expectation. I was young and in love and I hadn’t considered the challenges that we would face because of the differences in our childhood.

Fast forward thirteen years and I had to brush up on Bible verses for wives to write this post. It wasn’t that I had forgotten them, but that I haven’t needed to whisper them to myself each day. I’m blessed to have a marriage that I never would have thought possible even ten years ago.

There are many Bible verses that automatically come to Christian wives’ minds. However, I want to delve into the verses that we don’t always apply to wives. It is my prayer that by looking at them as wives specifically we’ll have a different appreciation and understanding of them.

“Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.” Song of Solomon 1:2

Do you remember you and your spouses’ first kiss? The one that caused your heart to flutter, your foot to “pop” and left you a bit hazy when it ended? As wives we need to be ready and willing to kiss our husbands anytime. If your husband isn’t an initiator, don’t let that keep you from kissing him. He is the one…your one. His love for you is better than wine. Kiss him.

“Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother’s children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but my own vineyard have I not kept.” Song of Solomon 1:6

During the honeymoon period we take extra care with our appearance. We don’t want our husbands to see us without our makeup, hair done and teeth brushed. As time goes by, we become less concerned with how we look. After all, he got us didn’t he? Why do we have to impress him now? Our husbands are human, even if they are married. That means that if as wives we need to be aware that other women in the world may catch their eye. It is important that we take care of ourselves. This will help keep our husband’s attention safely with us.

“The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills.” Song of Solomon 2:8

“I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled…” Song of Solomon 5:2

Think back to your early married years and how excited you would get when your husband would call or you’d hear his voice when he arrived home from work. Has that changed for you? Are you still excited to hear your husband’s voice…to talk to him? Communication is key to a good marriage. We need to be excited and set aside time to have intimate conversations with our husbands.

“My beloved is mine, and I am his…” Song of Solomon 2:16a

Early in relationships most of us have pet or nicknames for our significant others. Beloved is so much more than that. It truly is a term of endearment. The definition of beloved is; “Loved; greatly loved; dear to the heart“. Could this Bible verse be applied to how you feel about your husband? Is he in fact your beloved? Our husbands should be dearest to our hearts, second only to the Lord.

“By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not. I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my south loveth: I sought him, but I found him not. It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go…” Song of Solomon 3:1-2 and 4a

Waking up without your husband by your side caused you to go looking for him…in the early years of marriage. As the years go by though having the bed to yourself can be heavenly. Do you look to spend time with your husband? I mean actively look for it? Sometimes in the busyness of life we have to snag moments where we can. For example, when he is washing the car, plowing the driveway or cleaning his shop.

“I opened to my beloved, but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.” Song of Solomon 5:6

This Bible verse serves as a warning to me as a wife. I do not want to ever get to the place where I do not hasten at the voice of my husband. If we’re not faithful to keep our relationship with our husbands sacred, someday we may find that our husband has stopped calling out to us. He may find someone else’s ear more responsive and a relationship with them more inviting.

I love the book of Song of Solomon. It speaks to the heart God has given me for romance and love for my husband. Each time I read it, I find that the fire for my marriage is rekindled in my heart.

What do you love most about the book of Song of Solomon?
