Open Our Eyes: Preparing to Serve

Beyond opening our hearts and our ears to allow God to work in and through us, there is another step in the process to preparing ourselves to serve the Lord.

First, our hearts must be truly open to serving God anywhere, reaching anyone and doing anything He calls us to, then our ears must really be listening to Him, His will and those He brings our way, and finally we can open our eyes to the world around us.

The world is not at all what God originally created it to be, the beauty He created at times must be sought out. On first glance the world is often not a beautiful place, but once we allow God to open our eyes to all the things He sees, we will begin to wonder why we kept our eyes shut so tight for so long.

It’s easy to look at the bad things happening all around us, the wars, starvation, famine, etc. and just want to close our eyes and ignore it all. We tend to like the option of choosing to live in our own little world. Yet, closing our eyes doesn’t change the world, it doesn’t make the pain or hunger go away, and it certainly doesn’t bring the lost around us to Christ.

We must choose to open our eyes in order to see the pain, the broken lives, and the hungry children. These are the people that need Christ, they need to know that there is someone who cares and loves them. There is a future and a hope for them if they will only choose to believe in Him and accept Him into their lives, and we must be the ones to tell them of Christ.

If we keep our eyes closed to the people around us and the fact that they are lost and in need of Christ, then we are not fulfilling our part of the great commission. We are keeping Christ to ourselves, the greatest gift we’ve ever received. A gift is meant to be given and we need to ensure that we’re sharing the gift of Christ and the salvation He provides. In order to do this, our eyes must be open to all those around us, those that God brings our way.

How do we ensure our eyes are open to the world around us?

Our prayers need to be that God would allow us to truly see people as He does.

What We Must Remember….

  a. We can’t judge people from what we see, we must KNOW that we are sinners the same as others. We all are in need of a Savior, no matter what sin has beset us.

  b. We must realize that there are people much worse off than we could ever imagine, no matter how bad our lives may seem. These are the ones that God is calling us to reach, those that are lost, alone and desperately in need of Him.

  c. We need to reach those that are tough on the outside, those that don’t seem to want to be touched by others. They often are struggling alone inside, and believe that no one could understand, wants to know them or even cares about them. These people are often the hardest to reach for Christ, but if we’re patient, understanding and loving they will often open up to us in time.

Once our eyes have been opened by the Lord, we won’t be able to close them again. We will be broken by all those we’ve seen in pain, whether it be physical or spiritual. With our hearts open to any of God’s callings, our ears ready to hear Him speak, and our eyes seeing those in desperate need of Christ; we are ready for the next step in preparing to serve…

Which we will cover next week. 🙂

I’m praying for you as you seek the Lord’s help in removing the blinders from your eyes, so you can see the world full of people around you that are lost and in need of the precious gift we hold!
