An important part of building a mother-son relationship is having open communication. As our children grow up it becomes more important to pursue them to communicate.
As hormones begin to rage and friends become an influence to them, our children will be more prone to keeping things to themselves bottling everything up inside. Often times the reason they do this is because they don’t understand their feelings or they fear our response, so they don’t talk to us.
In order to begin building open mother-son communication you must be willing to make the first move. He needs to believe that you really want to know what he’s thinking and feeling, no matter how uncomfortable or difficult the conversation may be.
It is the hard topics that we should especially want our sons to talk to us about. If we aren’t willing to have the difficult talks with our songs, they will look to their peers and probably receive some (if not all) incorrect direction and advice.
Building an open communication relationship with our sons, we must be both patient and persistent. It will not likely happen overnight that our sons come to us to talk about anything.
We must be persistent in making the first move asking about their days, their opinions during family meetings, their thoughts during devotions, etc. As in most things in motherhood, we must be the very example of what we want from our children.
We must be patient both during the conversations with our sons and in waiting for them to initiate conversations with us. When they first begin opening up to us honestly, the words and conversations may be longer than we would expect, like or “have time” for. We need to allow time for these lengthy conversations, even if something else gets pushed off for the day. This prioritization is important in proving to our sons that their thoughts and feelings are of great importance to us. The more consistent we are in pursuing open communication and allowing time for our songs to talk honestly to us, the sooner our sons will begin to initiate conversations with us.
Having open communication with our sons is important to raising them to be Godly husbands and fathers. They need to know how to be open and honest in both of their roles and we are preparing them now for those roles. How we communicate with our sons today greatly influences their relationships in the future.
