What Kind of House are You Building?

As I was reading through Matthew chapter 7 this week as part of the Good Morning Girls Bible Study, I came across a story that I’ve heard over and over since I was a child. This story is taught to children often as a song and they love it. As an adult I found myself thinking about that song, the story and what it means to me today.

Matthew 7:24-27

What kind of house am I building? Am I focusing on building my house on things that last or only what applies to today?

Where does my focus lie? On the eternal or on the here and now?

Is my house a strong one with a firm foundation? Or is it being held up by sand that is just waiting for wind to come along and knock it down?

[Tweet “What kind of house I have is dependent on whether or not I’m building with Jesus as my rock.”]

What kind of house I have is dependent on whether or not I’m taking Jesus’ words and instructions to heart and doing them. Or am I merely reading His word and not putting what I know to be truth into action?

When we choose to live by the word of God, we have the ability to change the world for Christ. It is through living out the word of God in our daily lives that we have the opportunity to grow in Him, point others to Him and touch them with His love. Yet, all too often we read the words of God and fail to apply them to our hearts, minds, lives and actions.

We say that we long to see the world change, but we forget that we are here to be world changers. God calls us to reach the world for Him. The world simply will not change without us and in order for it to change we have to change. We have to be willing to take the word of God and live it out. Each. And. Every. Day.

The question posed to us in Matthew 7 is simply this…

Are we wise or are we foolish?

The answer is found in what kind of house we are building.
