While making time to chat and pray daily together with your son is important, sometimes you need a little time together away from home too. Whether it be that you need time alone to talk at length about important matters or you just need some fun time together alone, a mother-son weekend getaway is great for both!
This summer I knew it was time for my son and I to have “the talk” and I wanted to be able to discuss it openly, without interruption and I wanted him to be able to sleep on it and have the opportunity to ask any questions that he might have the next day. So, I began planning our first mother-son weekend getaway.
We love to tent camp and have most of the items we need for a camping trip, so the only cost involved for this trip was the site fee and food. I located a camping site close to home since we were leaving after my daycare hours. After we picked up our grocery items we were off on our adventure. Our mother-son weekend getaway involved a lot of talking, fishing, pictures, campfires and smores, and he even learned how to make breakfast on our trip!
Taking time to have a mother-son weekend getaway doesn’t have to be expensive or entertainment centered. This time alone together is meant to grow your relationship, not break the bank or keep him entertained. Our trip cost just over $100, we camped for one night and had simple meals. There were less expensive campsites, but they were further away, so it would have cost more $ in gas to get there. So, before you look for a less expensive lodging option make sure you weigh in the cost of travel to each location.
I chose to go camping with my son because it is something that we both love and because we needed time alone without distraction for serious conversation. Camping may not be right for you and your son, what’s important is to ensure that you have time together without constant entertainment for either one of you (TV, cell phones, theme parks, gaming, etc.)
A mother-son relationship requires time, effort, communication and prayer. Any changes that you desire to make or see in your relationship with your son will not happen overnight. You will need to be both consistent and patient. It is our responsibility as parents to take the first step in direction our children down a new path, we have to show them the way.
Since our first mother-son weekend getaway my son keeps asking when we’re going again and he has all sorts of ideas for where he wants to go next time. It was definitely a hit to spend time alone with him and I’m thankful for it, this trip grew us closer and has brought many questions my way that he may never have asked had we not taken this trip.
If your desire is to understand your son, discover what he’s thinking and feeling, direct him toward God’s future for him and just become closer as mother and son, I highly encourage you to take time to have a mother-son weekend getaway!
